This will see the news network venturing into regional and factual entertainment, besides adding to the existing fleet of news channels.
Seven new launches are being planned, including three news channels (one in HD), two regional entertainment channels, and two factual entertainment channels (one in UHD). The network is all set to add two regional channels to its bouquet, by launching a Bengali news channel and one for the North East region. It is pertinent to note that Focus News Network was the only leading TV network to have a news channel dedicated to North East. However, the network has put curtains down on that channel. Almost three years after acquiring NewsX from the late Jehangir Pocha and Nai Duniya’s Vinay Chhajlani, the network is all set to launch NewsX in HD, which will be a first-of-its-kind initiative for Indian news channels. Planned as an ad-free news channel, NewsX HD will deliver a multi-screen experience on a single screen to the multitasking high-profile urban viewers of India. Regarded as one of the most respected conferences in the media industry, the 13th edition of the Conclave, presented by NewsX and powered by ZEE, delved into the shifting media mindset and growth path ahead. Speakers and panel discussion highlighted the evolution of media and a common path for growth in these turbulent times.
Eminent names in the media Arnab Goswami, Editor-in-Chief and News anchor of Times Now presented the keynote address. He presented a strong case for the news broadcast industry in India and how media agencies need to put their faith to encourage investments in this sector. According to Mr Goswami, the news broadcast industry has massive potential to hold the attention of viewers, even when there are no spikes. “News is what users tweet about, what drives conversations, and thus the impact created by news broadcast is enormous. However, Indian media houses spend, on an average USD 8 – 10 million in production per year. In contrast, Fox News invested USD 732 million on production in 2012, CNN spent USD 698 million in the same period. Just imagine the stage where Indian news broadcast can reach if investments happen that are even 20 per cent more than the current advertising spends,” he said. One of the biggest names in the industry, Dominic Proctor, President of GroupM Global also addressed the gathering, sharing his views on the evolution of media and his expectations from the India market. Keeping in mind the fast changing atmosphere of the digital media industry and the trends in consumerism accompanying it, the talent pool in this industry needs to be in sync with the developments, he opined. According to Mr Proctor, development of this captive talent pool needs to be a priority area for the industry. “The media investment/management companies are more valuable than ever, in these times, and seen as a ripe employer. Even though the media industry is becoming automated, it will still need enough talent to devise strategies and decisions to move this industry forward. It is time to create and re-train the talent pool in this dynamic industry of today,” he added. Global leader Vikram Sakhuja, CEO, Maxus Worldwide spoke how digital media is not a subset but an entire ecosystem altogether. David Mayo, CEO, Bates Asia added that “The business of creative media is changing. Consumers are starting to dictate content. Progressive brands are realising this shift of media engagement. The advertising industry is making the consumers an integral part of the creative process.” Other speakers included Growth Gerry Boyle, Chairman, ZenithOptimedia Asia Pacific; Tjaco Walvis, Managing Partner, THEY; Pratap Bose, COO, DDB Mudra Group; Ravi Rao, Leader South Asia, Mindshare; Sunil Lulla, MD and CEO, Times Television Network; Sanjoy Chakrabarty, Managing Partner, ZenithOptimedia; Neeraj Roy, MD and CEO, Hungama Digital; Sam Balsara, Chairman and Managing Director, Madison World; Ashish Bhasin, Chairman India and CEO South East Asia, Aegis Group; Kartikeya Sharma Promoter of NewsX; Anupriya Acharya, Group CEO, ZenithOptimedia; CVL Srinivas, CEO South Asia, GroupM; Anil Jayaraj, Chief Marketing Officer, Pidilite; Ravi Deshpande, Founder, Whyness Worldwide; KV Sridhar, Chief Creative Officer, Leo Burnett India and Subcontinent; Nandini Dias, CEO, Lodestar UM; Karthi Marshan, Executive Vice President and Head – Group Marketing, Kotak; and Shubhranshu Singh, Marketing Director, India and South Asia, Visa. We have been associating with this platform for a few years now and are quite happy with the responsiveness of the media industry to this event.” These awards stand testimony to the relentless effort put in by a very young team: Kartikeya Sharma7/2/2015 News Broadcasting Awards or ENBA, started in 2008, honours the best work in television news broadcasting in India every year. I think this is one of the major reasons why people are turning to NewsX,” said Kartikeya Sharma of iTV Media Network. Gulati said, “I am fortunate to be working with the channel. He said, “Media industry relies to a great extent on advertising and that is best served when the general economic climate is positive. My simple expectation is that this Government's maiden budget is able to keep the faith of people, investors and businesses that there are clear steps towards Achche din that it has promised and on the back of which the markets have already reacted positively over the last 3 quarters. Overall, there should be clear structural correctional steps that are logical, feasible and credible. There are high expectations and that makes it all the more tougher. I feel, the budget will live up to them.” Source: http://www.exchange4media.com/59211_union-budget-2015-broadcasters-await-concrete-and-corrective-budget.html MUMBAI: NewsX, one of the fastest growing English News Channels won the 5th Mumbai Press Club Red Ink Awards for Excellence in Journalism-2015. Taking every challenge in his stride, the network’s Group Chairman talks about right decisions made at the right time, power of ‘differentiated content’ and what makes ITV grow at a time when the news genre bleeds. He is also upbeat about ITV’s soon-to-be-launched integrated social media platform, which he expects to be a key differentiator.
The journey of ITV started in 2007. Sharma’s initial goal was to launch a national channel. However, the economic downturn forced him to re-strategize. His new game plan was the regional news channel, India News. Today, ITV operates five regional channels under the brand name India News across Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and Bihar and Jharkhand. Subsequently, in 2012, ITV acquired NewsX (the channel’s third owner since its inception in 2008), an English news channel which had a market-share of less than 1% at the time. A business move that raised eyebrows of many, Sharma says even here the company saw the challenge as an opportunity to turn around a crisis. Since then, NewsX has managed to create a space in the market and build a viewership base for itself in the crowded English News genre. From building hotels to launching channels from scratch, the entrepreneur in Kartikeya Sharma seeks to contribute to society. Speaking to Simran Sabherwal and Henna Achhpal, he talks about differentiated content on Television, expectations from the new I&B Minister and why a free-to-air channel is not actually free-to-air. In terms of content and programming, all news channels look similar. Why don’t we see innovative or clutter-breaking programming? |
